Dan appeared on the Steve Harvey show to demonstrate how the OrCam MyEye device is making life more accessible for blind people, but there’s more… just a warning, you might need a tissue to watch this one!
In 2015-2016, Scott Schimmel, a student from Wake Forrest University, filmed and produced a documentary about Dan’s life after going blind. It aired on PBS, and is a true, honest look into Dan’s life, worries, and accomplishments.
About 6 months after his wreck, Dan’s demons took over and he was on the verge of suicide. His purpose came to him in a dream he had one night: build a motorcycle and become the first blind man to race the famed Bonneville Salt Flats.
Dan practices what he preaches and has spent thousands of hours in his shop learning or making adaptive techniques to run his machining equipment! Here’s a complex set up he came up with to machine the clips on his “Made in America” pens.
